3DCRT, Electron and IMRT
Three Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3DCRT)
3DCRT is the most traditional form of treatment. Depending on the diagnosis it can be the preferred treatment and is highly effective. ARO has a variety of equipment to help patients feel comfortable whilst ensuring their position is maintained and reproduced for each treatment.
Electron Treatment
Linear accelerators produce two types of radiation, photons and electrons. Electrons cannot travel as far into the body as photons so are not as commonly used but are very good for treating superficial or shallow targets. A simulation (pre-treatment planning) appointment is required to determine the best treatment position but a CT planning scan is not usually required for electron treatments .
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Similar to other techniques IMRT shapes the radiation beams closely around the target. The key difference with IMRT is the intensity of the radiation beam can be adjusted in multiple small volumes. This means higher radiation doses can be focused to regions within the target. Due to the complexity of the software/system, IMRT requires additional planning time and safety checks. It also requires longer daily treatment times.
IMRT has largely been replaced by VMAT at ARO due to the speed of delivery but remains a technique ARO are technically able to deliver should it be the best option for a patient.
Understanding Your Treatment
The Patient Pathway
We understand you may be anxious about having radiation therapy. Read about the patient pathway and what to expect before, during and after radiation therapy treatment. AT ARO we work closely with your radiation oncologist to develop an individualised treatment plan for each patient.
