Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)
Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is a method of delivering treatment quickly and accurately. During treatment the patient lies on a treatment couch where the machine rotates around and delivers the radiation in sweeping uninterrupted arcs (1-4). VMAT works in parallel with Image guided radiation treatment (IGRT).

The shape and intensity of the radiation can change as the machine rotates. VMAT technology distributes radiation through the body to the target in the best and quickest way possible.
VMAT maximises the radiation dose to the target while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissues and is used for the majority of treatments at ARO. VMAT allows cancers to be treated that are in delicate areas in the body. In cases where a tumour is wrapped around an organ, VMAT can accurately target the tumour while minimising damage to the organ.
